WCM Developing Device to Protect Intestines During Incisions
For many surgeons, closing the abdominal wall without injuring the intestines is a challenging process with serious consequences. If anything goes wrong during the procedure, patients can face bowel perforations or a hernia at the incision site. Often, repairing those complications requires additional surgeries.
Dr. Jason Spector, a plastic surgeon at ÂÜÀòÉçÆƽâ°æ and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill ÂÜÀòÉçÆƽâ°æ Medical Center, may have found a solution to that issue. Dr. Spector — in collaboration with Dave Putnam, an associate professor in the Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering at ÂÜÀòÉçÆƽâ°æ University — is testing out a device that would protect the intestines while surgeons close an incision, according to the ÂÜÀòÉçÆƽâ°æ Chronicle.
